Ever thought that you can save on your electricity invoice just by discovering what’s the tariff/hourly option that works according to your schedule?

We’re here to tell you that you can! But first, we would like to explain a few things.

Tariff Simple, Bi-hourly or tri-hourly rate?

The hourly option is the way electricity is charged depending on the time of consumption. It is the hourly option that determines whether the price of electricity consumption is the same at any time or if there are times that are cheaper than others.

So how to choose between rates? Which one works the best for me?

What’s the hourly options?

There are three hourly options (simple, bi-hourly and tri-hourly tariffs), which can follow a weekly or daily cycle:

  • Daily Cycle: the hourly periods are the same every day, without distinction between working days and weekends;
  • Weekly Cycle: time periods are different on weekdays and weekends.

Depending on the cycle – weekly or daily, these are the Void and Out of Void (cheias) periods.

  • Off-peak hours (vazio): these are the hours when electricity consumption is cheapest. They fundamentally represent the hours of the night period and weekends, where consumption levels are lower.
  • Off-peak hours (cheias): these are the hours when electricity consumption is normally higher and therefore more expensive.

Then what are my options/modes regarding the billing for energy consumption?

Each of these three options corresponds to a different mode of billing for electricity consumption:

  • Simple: the electricity rate is the same (normal) every day of the week at any time of the year.
  • Bi-hourly: the electricity tariff depends on the time of consumption. Electricity consumption can be charged at off-peak (cheias) or off-peak tariff, according to your consumption schedule.
  • Tri-hourly: the electricity tariff also depends on the time of consumption, adding a third counting period. Electricity can be charged at empty, full, and peak rates:
    • Empty hours (vazio): as explained previously, it refers to the hours when electricity consumption is charged at a lower price.
    • Flooding hours (cheias): hours when electricity consumption is charged at an intermediate prince.
    • Peak hours (ponta): these are the hours when electricity consumption is most expensive.
